Wellsford SCHOOL OVERVIEW
Our school mission statement reads:
I roto i enei ahuatanga, atawhai, nga tupu ngawari. Kia puawai ai te taro o te ara tika. Nurture the tender plants in this day and age so they may blossom to their fullest potential and righteousness. Our Government’s Vision:
Young people who will be confident, connected, actively involved, life-long learners. The Principles on which our curriculum decisions are made include… 1. High expectations, 2. Treaty of Waitangi- Te reo Maori me ona Tikanga, 3. Culture diversity, 4. Inclusion, 5. Community engagement, 6. Coherence, 7. Future focused |
Our vision is:
To prepare our students for a future that fulfils their individual potential by developing self-directed, positive, confident young people with sound academic knowledge and skill, who can set and achieve meaningful goals, and who act with integrity and social responsibility. These values are promoted… in the way we deliver learning to students, the manner in which we relate to students and each other as staff, and in how we encourage students to relate to each other.
To encourage these values the school runs a C.A.R.E. Programme. C.A.R.E. spells Citizenship, Achievement, Responsibility, and Effort. Children are acknowledged as much as possible for displaying citizenship, achieving results, showing responsibility in a variety of ways, and for demonstrating effort. As the year progresses students work towards Bronze, Silver and Gold C.A.R.E. awards which are a combination of all 4 categories. |
Key Competencies
Key Competencies are the important skills the Government and this community believes our students should have.
Government’s Key Competencies
Thinking is about using creative, critical, and metacognitive processes to make sense of information, experiences and ideas.
Using language, symbols & Text is about working with and making meaning of the codes in which knowledge is expressed. These ‘codes’ are the symbols we use to convey meaning in letters, words, punctuation, mathematical symbols, etc.
Managing Self is about self-motivation, a ‘can do’ attitude, and with students believing they are capable learners. These types of students are enterprising, resourceful, reliable and resilient, and can establish goals, make plans, manage projects, and set high standards.
Relating to Others is about interacting effectively with a diverse range of people in a variety of contexts. It involves listening to others, recognising different points of view, negotiating, and sharing ideas.
Participating & Contributing is about being actively involved in communities like family, whanau, school, wider community, etc, and using these connections to support learning, work, recreation and/or celebration.
